About Winnipeg International Airport

Winnipeg International AirportWinnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG) is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada. Over 3 million travelers fly through this airport each year making it the eighth active passenger airport in Canada. It is also the third largest cargo airport in Canada.

When it opened in 1928, the airport was originally named Stevenson Aerodrome after the famous local aviator Fred Stevenson. It was the first airport in Canada to provide international flights. In 1958, the airport’s name was changed to Winnipeg International Airport. Since 1997, the Winnipeg Airports Authority has operated the airport with a goal of improving passenger service and air travel. Later in 2006, the airport was given its current name to recognize the aviation businessman from Winnipeg who contributed greatly to the area.

Major construction and renovations also began in 2006. A four-story parking garage was built. The original terminal is designed with the modernist architecture style with the new terminal designed by famous architect Cesar Pelli opening in 2011.

The airport provides a variety of retail and eating options as well as a chapel, business center, and children’s play area. Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport has two operational runways and is surrounded with land slated to be business parks.
