About Wellington International Airport

Wellington International AirportWellington International Airport (WLG) is located near Wellington, New Zealand, on the Rongotai isthmus. It is bordered by commercial businesses, residential neighborhoods, Wellington Harbor, and Cook Strait. Over 5 million passengers fly through this airport yearly making it the third largest airport in New Zealand.

Besides commercial passenger flights, this airport also houses several general aviation businesses. The airport has only one runway and crosswinds cause many rough landings. In 1929, the airport began with a grass runway that was used for many years. Eventually, in 1947, the airport was closed due to unsafe conditions of the grass runway during winter. It reopened in 1959 after major construction. In the 1970s, the runway was lengthened to accommodate larger planes. However, the runway is still too short for many of the larger passenger planes, but there are no immediate plans for expansion. In the 1990s, the airport converted a nearby golf course into additional automobile parking, and the single terminal experienced major expansion and improvements. Recently, the Wellington International Airport adopted the theme of Wild at Heart to promote business.
