San Francisco Airport Ground Transportation

San Francisco International Airport, located about 12 miles south of downtown San Francisco, is one of three major air transportation hubs in the greater San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area. The airport is centralized in design, consisting of 3 domestic and 2 international concourses that are accessible via the main terminal, from where passengers connect with all ground transportation.

Driving Directions To The Airport
From the north, including downtown San Francisco, take Highway 101 directly to the airport exit. Follow signs for domestic or international flights, and to arrivals, departures, or parking garage. From the south, drive north on Highway 101 to the airport exit, and follow the same procedures. If coming from the west, take Highway 380 eastbound, merge onto Highway 101 southbound, and take the airport exit.

Parking Facilities
San Francisco International Airport provides both short term and long term parking options. Parking garages with hourly rates are located alongside both of the international departure concourses as well as behind the main terminal building. All short-term garages are connected to each other and the terminal hall by the free AirTrain line. The long term parking garages are located at the junction of Highways 101 and 380, with shuttle service connection to the main terminal hall.

Ground Transportation Services
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) serves the airport along the same route as the AirTrain, and affords easy transportation to downtown San Francisco and other destinations. Additionally, Caltrain (via transfer to BART) and SamTrans serve this airport. SamTrans provides bus service to San Francisco, Palo Alto, and San Mateo County. The Rental Car Center is located just north of the main terminal and is accessed via the AirTrain Blue Line route. All rental car pickup and drop-off is conducted at this site, though most major rental car companies have customer service counters inside the main terminal building. Taxis are available in designated taxi areas located on the island roadway centers outside baggage claim. Located in the roadway islands on the departure level are the designated hotel/motel shuttle pickup areas. Telephones are provided at each of these stations for contacting hotels. Shared-ride vans depart from this area as well, and can be hired with or without advance reservations. Several limousine operators are contracted to serve the airport, but reservations must be made in advance to secure a pickup location. Most of the Bay Area cities have special air porter bus services that run from the central business districts to the main terminal of San Francisco International Airport.
