About San Diego International Airport

San Diego International AirportSan Diego International Airport, better known to local residents as Lindbergh field, is only 3 miles away so aircraft make low approaches over the central downtown district when landing. San Diego International Airport is only 20 miles from the border, so the airport at Tijuana, Mexico can be used as an alternate landing site if needed.

The airport is divided into a small commuter plane terminal, plus terminals 1 and 2. With several shops and restaurants at both terminals 1 and 2, San Diego is a great place for a relaxing layover. Many volunteers meet and greet passengers while providing information.

With a single runway surrounded by the city and San Diego Bay, the airport has done a great job of efficiently maximizing the available acreage. Although San Diego is the busiest single runway airport in the country, it is not a hub for any airline. Southwest Airlines has the most destinations from San Diego, and British Airways plans to resume service to London.

Pioneer aviator Charles Lindbergh is forever associated with San Diego, as it was here that the Ryan aircraft company built the Spirit of St Louis, which he flew to New York for his famous transatlantic flight to Paris.
