About San Antonio International Airport

San Antonio International AirportSan Antonio International Airport is situated in North San Antonio, and is only eight miles from the shops and restaurants downtown. The two major highways in San Antonio, Loop 410 and U.S. 281, provide access to the two main entrances of the airport. San Antonio International Airport is an expansive facility that covers 2,600 acres.

The airport was founded in 1941 when land was acquired by the City of San Antonio. The original intent was to build the “San Antonio Municipal Airport.” However, World War II changed everything, and it instead opened in 1942 as “Alamo Field,” a training base for the U.S. Air Force. Once the war ended, the military returned the facility to the city. When the World’s Fair came to San Antonio in 1968, eight jet bridge gates and passenger holding areas were added to the airport as part of a brand new, state-of-the-art satellite concourse.

San Antonio International Airport has both hourly and daily parking, and can accommodate more than 7,076 vehicles. Airport features include a free cell phone waiting lot and in-terminal services such as computer stations and Wi-Fi hot spots, ATM locations, and even a chapel on premises. San Antonio International Airport has an award-winning concession program called SA on the Fly, which boasts more than 40 restaurants, business centers, banking locations, gift shops, and more.
