About Salt Lake City International Airport

Salt Lake City International AirportThe Salt Lake City International Airport, situated in western Salt Lake City, serves as the center of air-commerce for the Wasatch Front (north-central Utah). The airport is located less than 5 miles northwest of downtown.

Interestingly, Salt Lake City International began as a no-frills, single airstrip for military training, with a cinder-covered runway in 1911, on the desolate land that was then known as Basque Flats, a marshy pasture used by sheepherders. In 1920, the port entered into the commercial realm, as the United States Postal Service extended air-mail service to Salt Lake City. Within five years, Western Air Express (later Western Airlines) brought passenger travel and expansion of the facility.

Charles Lindberg brought a thrill by stopping by the airfield in 1927, showing off his "Spirit of St. Louis", the first monoplane to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. During World War II, the Air Force used the site as a training base and replacement depot.

Salt Lake City International Airport finds itself today with 2 terminals, 5 concourses, and 83 gates, with over 450 departing planes a day. Salt Lake City International frequently enjoys being ranked in the top 5 in the United States for on-time departure percentage amongst United States international airports. Airport visitors can enjoy an on-site golf course, a beauty salon, free wireless internet and over 25 dining options.
