About Raleigh-Durham International Airport

Raleigh-Durham International AirportThe Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is located between the cities of Raleigh and Durham in the small town of Morrisville, North Carolina. The airport opened in May of 1943 and was used primarily by Eastern Airlines, Piedmont Airlines, and Capital Airlines during the mid twentieth century. Delta Airlines and American Airlines joined the airport in the 1970s and 1980s respectively, and today are two of the primary airlines operating from RDU, along with Southwest Airlines, US Airways, and Continental Airlines. AirCanada and AirTran offers select flights from the airport as well.

Raleigh-Durham Airport currently operates approximately 365 flights out of two terminals daily. The terminals are not connected, and connecting flights between the two must therefore be reached by shuttle bus. Terminal 2, the newer of the two terminals, is currently undergoing expansion to add Concourse D where US Airways will offer service. Three lounge areas currently exist at RDU through American Airlines, Delta SkyClub and US Airways. Dining and shopping are available at both terminals.

Although easily accessible to both Raleigh and Durham, RDU is actually located in an area that at first sight appears to be quite rural. It is in fact a smaller suburban area. Hotels, restaurants and convenient stores are located off nearby I-40 for travelers, and the city of Raleigh can be reached in 10 to 15 minutes by car.
