Portland Information

Portland, a large city situated at the Willamette and Columbia rivers, is known for its public transportation and efficiency. The city, located in Multnomah County, is also known as the most environmentally friendly cities in the world. It is also known for its tranquil, relaxing mood. It is known as the City of Roses for its emphasis on gardens and other natural beauty.

With a population of more than 583,700 people, Portland is the 29th largest city in the country in terms of number of people. The warm summers and mild, wet winters make Portland an ideal destination for travelers year round. The city averages about 77 degrees in the summer and 50 degrees in the winter.

The area that makes up Portland today was initially inhabited by Chinook and Cascade Indians. In 1843, two men named Asa Lovejoy and William Overton purchased the land. Overton, however, sold his portion to France Pettygrove. The two men could not decide on one name for the land, as they both wanted to name the area after their respective hometowns. The decision was settled with a coin toss, which Pettygrove won. The land was named Portland and was incorporated in 1851 with just 800 residents.

Today, the city of Portland is known for its indie artistic scene, including numerous performing arts institutions. Portland arts include dance and a vast array of musical genres. The entertainment industry also seems to find the city fascinating, as several films and television shows are either set or shot in the city, including Gone, Twilight, Coraline, Grimm and Portlandia.

Portland is also known for its museums, gardens, bookstores, and independent businesses. As a well-rounded city, Portland is also home to several popular athletics programs, including basketball, ice hockey, and soccer. Roller derby and bicycling around town are both popular activities among residents.

Portland is not only known as the Green City; it is also called Stumptown, Bridgetown, and Portlandia. The city is unique for its extinct volcanoes and its fondness for a good cup of coffee. Portland is one of the only cities that can offer both an urban landscape and rural forest. This city is at the forefront of planning and caring for the environment surrounding it. Often compared to Seattle for its dreary days, love of the arts and Pacific Northwest location, Portland has its own flair to offer.
