Pensacola Information

Pensacola is located in the Florida Panhandle on the Pensacola Bay. Pensacola Bay is an outlet of the Gulf of Mexico. Pensacola is not a large city. Its current population stands at around 52,000 residents. Pensacola is one of the oldest cities in America.

The first inhabitants of the Pensacola area were a Native-American tribe called the Pensacola. The bay was named for the tribe, and the city is named for the bay.

After a period of Spanish exploration, a colony of settlers arrived from Mexico in 1559. The colony was struck by a violent hurricane, and many of the colonists made the decision to move to other Spanish colonies in the region. Some returned to Mexico.

In 1698, the Spanish government recolonized the area. The Spanish remained in control of the city until 1763 when the British government came into possession of the city.

After the American Revolutionary War, Britain handed the city of Pensacola back to the Spanish. In 1819, Spain sold its possessions in Florida, including Pensacola, to the United States government.

Pensacola developed as an important port city and as a naval base. Timber and cotton were the major exports from the port.

The city played an important role in the American Civil War. The city was the location of the first Civil War battle in Florida. It was also the site of the Battle of Santa Rosa Island. In 1862, the city fell to Union forces. The Union held the city for the remainder of the war and used the naval base in its blockade of Confederate ports.

The military has played a significant role in the development of Pensacola. Much of the city's economic life is dependent on the large military installations in the city. Pensacola is home to a large naval air station noted for its pilot training programs. It is also the home of the Blue Angels flying squadron. A large naval hospital and a naval technical training center are also located in the city.

Tourism is another major factor in the Pensacola economy. The city is well-known for its resort hotels and pristine, white sand beaches. Besides its beaches, Pensacola offers several museums and Civil War sites that are interesting to visit.

Pensacola has a very humid climate, especially in the summer. In the winter, the city is warm but not as warm as the cities along Florida's Atlantic coast.
