Orlando Information

Orlando, Florida is located in the central part of the state. It is approximately 85 miles east of Tampa and 220 miles northwest of Miami. As of the 2010 Census, Orlando had a population of 238,300, ranking it as the 79th largest city in the United States. The greater metropolitan Orlando area encompasses such cities as Kissimmee, Sanford, Winter Park, and Altamonte Springs.

A Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) that covers about 4,000 square miles, the Orlando MSA had a population of 2,134,411 in 2010. That figure was good enough to place it number 26 of all Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the United States and third in the state of Florida, behind Miami and Tampa.

Known for its concentration of amusement parks and attractions around the city, Orlando is often referred to as theTheme Park Capital of the World. Tourism is the most important driver of the local economy. Orlando attracts more than 50 million domestic and international travelers each year. International tourism accounts for approximately 7 percent (3.6 million) of the entire tourist count.

Orlando is the largest city in Florida that is not situated on either the Atlantic or Gulf Coast. While the city is located inland, about 60 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean and 90 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico, it is blessed with a number of large lakes including Lake Eola, Lake Butler and Turkey Lake.

Before the first European settlers came to the area that is now known as Orlando in 1536, Native Americans inhabited the mostly swamp land and intermittent strands of trees. It was a tough way of life and the Creek, Seminole and other Indian Tribes learned to live off the land. Some time around 1836, the area became known as Orlando. There is some conjecture as to whether it was named after a fallen soldier in the Seminole Indian War, or, after sugar mill owner Orlando Reeves.
