About Oakland International Airport

Oakland International AirportOakland International Airport (OAK) is one of three airports in the San Francisco Bay area. It is located in south Oakland along the bay and is surrounded by residential neighborhoods, commercial businesses, and wetlands. Over 11 million passengers fly through the airport each year.

This airport has a historical past. In 1927, Oakland International Airport was dedicated by American aviator Charles Lindbergh, and, in 1937, it was the departing airport for Amelia Earhart’s final flight. During World War II, the government moved all commercial service to San Francisco International Airport so the U.S. military could use this airport for flights to the Pacific. More information on the airport’s history can be found in the Oakland Aviation Museum that is located on North Field at the airport.

In addition, Oakland International Airport provides general aviation services. From 2004 through 2008, the airport experienced major construction with the addition of more gates, a new baggage claim area, and improved roads and parking. In support of fine arts, the airport regularly displays various artwork in different corridors and lounges for public appreciation. In 2009, this airport ranked first for highest number of planes arriving on time.
