New York City Information

New York City (also known as "The Big Apple") is one of the most famous, important, and influential cities in the world.

A city where residents live, work, and play at all hours of the day, New York is known for its fast pace in lifestyle. New York offers many of the worlds greatest museums, theaters, art galleries, and restaurants; as well as some of the largest corporations. New York also boasts one of the most predominant skylines in the world featuring the Empire State Building.

New York's story first begins when Native American tribes arrived to New York around 10,000 BC. This colony then passed through the sovereignty of the French, Dutch, and then the English who named it New York, after the then Duke of New York. New York has been one of the main entry points for Europeans to America. Over the years, New York has experienced economic booms to bankruptcy, gone through sub-urbanization, and September 11, giving New York its rich and fascinating history.

With a population of over 8.2 million residents, New York is the most crowded city in America. Spanning over a land area of 305 square miles, New York is situated along the Hudson River in the most southern part of the Mid-Atlantic region.

New York is organized into five separate counties. Each county has its own unique culture and is large enough to be a city. These counties are Manhattan (New York County), Brooklyn (Kings County), Queens (Queens County), The Bronx (Bronx County), and Straten Island (Richmond County).

Manhattan is at the center of New York, featuring the Empire State Building, Times Square, Wall Street, and Central Park. Brooklyn is known for its art and music scene, beautiful beaches, and Coney Island. Queens is the locale of two international airports, New York Mets, and the second largest Chinatown in America. The Bronx is home to the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the Botanical Gardens. Straten Island has a more relaxed and suburban character.

New York has a diverse ethnic population, with many immigrants living in the city. There are many Hispanic and Chinese communities living in New York. English is the main language spoken in New York. Many New York residents can also speak Spanish.

New York has a humid climate and experiences all four seasons. Summer is hot and humid between June and September. Autumn is crisp and dry between September and December. Winter is chilly from December to March. Spring is wet from March to June.
