About New York JFK Airport

New York JFK AirportConsidered one the busiest airports in the world, the New York's JFK International Airport is located 15 miles from Manhattan in southern Queens. Originally named Idlewild Airport after the golf course it was built on, the airport experienced a few name changes over the years, but had its final renaming in 1963 after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Construction on New York City's second airport began in 1943 and its first commercial flight took off on July 1, 1948. Initially, the airport was designed to cover only 1,000 acres, but has since grown to approximately 5,000 acres with 25 miles of taxiways and 9 miles of runway. Between 80-90 airlines operate out of JFK's 8 terminals, with regular flights to and from over 50 countries.

Each terminal in the airport has many services and conveniences for its millions of yearly passengers to enjoy while they wait or pass through. JFK offers a wide variety of restaurants to meet every budget, with choices ranging from Wolfgang Puck to McDonald's. They even have a selection of popular cafes and bars like Starbucks and the Sam Adams Bar. JFK also has numerous name-brand retail stores to shop at like Cartier, Brookstone, and Victoria's Secret. CNN, Hudson, and CNBC newsstands, shoe shine and repair stands, and 10 minute manicures are a few of the services offered to visitors.
