About Montréal-Mirabel International Airport

Montreal-Mirabel International AirportThe Montréal-Mirabel International Airport is located in Montreal, Canada, made with the premise of being the largest airport in the world in terms of surface area. It actually was, until the King Fahd International Airport was built in 1999. The airport is used mostly for cargo flights, but it has other uses, including general aviation and medical evacuation flights.

As Montreal experienced its economic boom in the 1960s, previous laws, which bottlenecked foreign traffic at a single airport in Montreal, began to clog the entire Canadian aerospace system. As more and more people used the airport (Dorval Airport) for business travel and touring stops, traffic increased upwards of 15%, and government officials began scouting the area for a new airport location to take the pressure off.

They finally decided on the current location of the Montréal-Mirabel International Airport, expropriated more than 90,000 acres of land, and built the site in 1969. The airport was completed just in time for Montreal to host the 1976 Olympics.
