About Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport

Milwaukee General Mitchell International AirportGeneral Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is located five miles south of downtown Milwaukee, WI near the western shore of Lake Michigan. The airport is Wisconsin’s largest and serves more than 40 domestic and international airports. It was identified as the world’s third fastest-growing airport in 2010. Nonetheless, Mitchell International is easy to navigate and is not terribly congested – and for that reason, it’s a popular alternative to Chicago O’Hare and Midway.

Mitchell International Airport was originally established as Hamilton Airport in 1920. Milwaukee County purchased the property in 1926 and Kohler Aviation was offering flights from the airfield and across Lake Michigan by 1929. Following major construction in 1940, the airport was renamed to honor U.S. Army Brigadier General Billy Mitchell, a Milwaukee native and the “father” of the U.S. Air Force.

The Milwaukee airport today is a hub for AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines. Air Canada, Continental, Delta, Southwest, and United are among the airport’s other carriers. All flights depart from one of three concourses in a single terminal.

Travelers have access to a small but attractive selection of shops and restaurants. Renaissance Books, a top-notch used bookstore, is reputed to be the first used book store located in an airport. A Harley-Davidson Shop, a PGA Store, and the free Mitchell Gallery of Flight Museum also help to pass the time.
