About London Heathrow Airport
London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is considered one of the world’s busiest international airports with 67 million passengers flying through the airport each year. The airport gets its name from an old agricultural town named Heath Row which was torn down in 1944 to build a military air base. After World War II ended, the property officially became the new civil passenger airport. Heathrow Airport is located approximately 14 miles west of downtown London in the Hillingdon Borough.
As the airport grew in popularity, the railway and underground subway were both extended to connect the airport to the greater London area. The Concorde, the first supersonic passenger jet, regularly made transatlantic flights from Heathrow beginning in 1976 until 2003 when the jet was retired.
Through the years, various members of United Kingdom royal families have inaugurated new expansions to the airport. All five terminals contain many helpful businesses including an assortment of well-known restaurants, designer stores, duty free shops, comfortable lounges, and even a beauty spa which offers massages to tired passengers. Terminal 4 also has over 30 hotel cabins where passengers can take a short nap while waiting for their plane. Currently, over 90 different airlines regularly fly through this busy airport.
