About Johannesburg International Airport

Johannesburg International AirportOR Tambo International Airport is a large airport situated near the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the main transportation hub for South Africa, and the largest airport in Africa. In 2010, approximately 28 million people traveled through OR Tambo.

The airport was recently renamed, in 2006, after politician Oliver Tambo, a former president of the African National Congress. Though it has had several name changes since its founding in 1952, the airport does carry an important historical distinction. The first commercial jet airliner, the de Havilland Comet, ended its maiden voyage from Heathrow, London in OR Tambo, ushering in the "jet age."

Though OR Tambo has all the amenities one would expect of a major airport, many additional developments and improvements were made in 2009, in preparation for Johannesburg's hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Most notably, the international pier was greatly expanded to accommodate larger aircraft for the increased travel during the World Cup.

OR Tambo is a large airport, with 6 terminals and three main areas - domestic, international, and transit. As a prominent world transportation hub, OR Tambo is one of only 3 airports that offers direct flights to all 6 inhabited continents.
