Istanbul Airport Information

Istanbul Ataturk Airport, known also by the airport code IST, provides principle international air service to the country of Turkey. The airport is located in the city of Yesilkoy near Istanbul and is among the busiest in the world. The airport ranked 17th busiest for international travelers and 30th busiest for total travelers in 2011. Numbers of travelers continue to grow and airport expansion is planned for the future. The airport is a principle hub and headquarters for Turkish Airlines.

A total of 37 million passengers passed through the three terminals at Istanbul Ataturk Airport in 2011. Of these, about 24 million were international and utilized Terminal 2 at the airport. This terminal was built in 2000 and is already under expansion. The Domestic Terminal is an older building that previously served the international trade. In total, the two terminals offer 41 gates and 15 baggage claim areas.

General aviation has its own terminal at Istanbul Ataturk Airport. This includes private and charter aircraft arriving or departing the airport. Security services and customs checks are provided at the General Aviation Terminal.

The airport utilizes three runways. Two parallel runways of 3,000 meters or about 10,000 feet handle much of the traffic. Of these two runways, only one is lit and used for night operations. A shorter runway, 2,300 meters or 7,500 feet, is also lit and used for smaller aircraft. Future plans include adding a third parallel runway to improve the volume of aircraft the airport can handle. Currently, the airport sees as many as a half million takeoffs or landings each year. The airspace above and surrounding the airport is busy with Sabiha Gokcan International Airport, also located at Istanbul, utilizing much of the same space.

Instanbul Ataturk Airport also provides airfreight services. The airport handles as much as 300,000 tones of freight each year and offers inspection services, climate controlled storage, animal quarantine and handling facilities for oversized cargo.

Ground transportation to Istanbul is available from a number of sources. A rail line connects the airport to locations within the city and to Istanbul's bus services. Shuttle buses from the airport to some of the hotels in the region are also available. Car rentals and taxis are also available. The road system at the airport ultimately connects to the Trans-European Motorway.
