Indianapolis Information

Situated almost in the exact center of the state, Indiana was a planned city that is the state capital of Indiana in the United States. Today, the metropolis is considered a top place to live by Forbes and other organizations, and it is one of the country's most rapidly growing and expanding areas. The city also has thoroughfares for car travel to other major cities in the mid-west and beyond. Known as the "Crossroads of America," Indianapolis has a rich historic heritage and is a vibrant contemporary metropolis.

As far as the crossroads go, Indianapolis is fairly centrally located near to other major cities in the Midwest. Columbus in Ohio is less than 180 miles east from the city, and St. Louis in Illinois is less than 250 miles to the southwest. Indianapolis is less than 120 miles north from Louisville in Kentucky, and the urban center is approximately a mere 185 miles southeast from Chicago.

Then, such a thriving urban center is bound to sprawl, and Indiana does spread over 300,000 square miles of area in the country's Central Till Plains. Crossing through the city are two rivers, White River and Fall Creek.

Now originally, the White River was thought to be a good waterway for traffic to and from Indianapolis. However, the river did not work well for travel because it was shallow with too much sand in it. Still, the city was well-planned. In fact, the location was chosen as the capital of the state in 1820, and the talented Alexander Ralston who had assisted Pierre L'Entfant of France when he designed the layout for Washington D.C. was commissioned to draw up plans for Indianapolis. Ralston planned the city as one square mile with streets radiating out from a circle in the heart.

Over time, the growing urban center has been more than a leader in government. Indianapolis has become a hub for car manufacturing and racing. All things considered although the city a great place to live in so many ways, its weather can be severe. Having all four seasons, the humid summer temperatures linger around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, the winter can last well into spring. The temperatures for winter drop below freezing and even frequently below 0 degrees. Still, the weather does not seem to dampen the spirit of the many proud and contented citizens of Indianapolis.
