Houston Hobby International Airport Information

Being the second biggest airport in the city of Houston, the Houston William P. Hobby (HOU) Airport handles more than 9 million passengers every year. Such statistics put HOU on the list of the top 45 busiest airports in the United States. The airport primiarily alleviates plenty of domestic air traffic from the city's largest airport, the George Bush International Airport. However, Houston William P. Hobby Airport still boasts the historic bragging rights to being the city's first major commercial air hub.

In fact, the rich aviation history of the HOU Airport and Houston can be explored at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum. The museum is housed in a restored 1940 art deco style building that was the first ever terminal used for commercial flights in Houston. The 1940 Air Terminal Museum has a fascinating collection of historic aircraft used for private and business purposes. Examples of aircraft on display include a Lockheed Lodestar, Hawk business jet, and St Louis Helicopter. The museum has also acquired a historic WR4 hangar that houses some of the aircraft and can be used for further exhibitions. Some lucky families may even win a grand prize as the museum gives away a historic airplane in an annual raffle entry.

Since its opening in the early 20th century, the airport went by several names such as W.T. Carter Field, Houston Municipal Airport, and Howard R. Hughes Airport. In 1967, the Houston William P. Hobby (HOU) Airport was renamed in honor of William Pettus Hobby, who was the governor of Texas between 1917 and 1920.

Houston William P. Hobby (HOU) Airport occupies more than 1,300 acres in the southern part of Houston. The airport has more than 40 total hangars and four runways. More than 250 aircraft are based at the airport. Two of the longer runways at the HOU airport stretch for just over 7,600 feet. The shortest runway is 5,149 feet long and has the code name 12L/30R. There is also a runway that is exactly 6,000 feet long.

The terminal complex at HOU airport sits on 80 acres and offers state of the art amenities. The parking options include ecopark 1, ecopark 2, and a parking garage. Overall, Houston William P. Hobby (HOU) Airport offers more than 4,000 parking spaces for passenger vehicles. The four level parking garage is connected to the main terminal building, creating a convenient connection.
