About Honolulu International Airport

Honolulu International AirportDespite not being based in the continental United States, Honolulu International Airport is still one of the busiest airports in the country. This is due to Hawaii being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Honolulu International Airport averages approximately 21 million travelers per year. It’s not only a convenient and central location for tourists, but for business travelers as well. Honolulu International Airport is less than 3 miles from the business district of Oahu.

Honolulu International Airport is the primary commercial airport in Hawaii. It has been the busiest airport in Hawaii for decades. It was built in 1927 – then named John Rogers Airport – but after the attack on Pearl Harbor it was used for military purposes. It wasn’t until 1947 that it became a mostly commercial airport again, when it was renamed Honolulu International Airport.

Looking to the future, an expansion is planned over the next 12 years. Parts of this expansion are already complete, including a new parking garage and improved flight display screens. The Honolulu International Airport has always offered 24-hour emergency medical services, 24-hour shopping and dining, and 24-hour business facilities.

The standout feature for the Honolulu International Airport is the offshore Reef Runway. On the more standard side, the Honolulu International Airport has a Commuter Terminal (local flights to small airports), an Interisland Terminal (local flights to commercial airports), and a Main Terminal (domestic and international flights).
