Greensboro International Airport Information

The Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) is located several miles west of Greensboro, the third largest city in the state of North Carolina. The name of the airport refers to the Piedmont Triad region in NC, which includes other major cities such as Winston-Salem and High Point. Overall, GSO Airport primarily serves more than a dozen counties in the northwestern parts of North Carolina. With more than 270 daily flights, Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport is the third busiest airport in the state.

The origins of the Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport go back to the late 1920's when it was known as the Tri-City Airport, with Langley Field serving as the landing and takeoff location. The airport quickly became an essential component in the United States air mail service. In the 1930's, government airmail carrier launched the first passenger service from Langley Field. During World War II, the airport was overtaken by the United States Army Air Corps and served as a major refueling depot and training base for fighter and bomber jets. As with many airports throughout the country, Triad Airport experienced rapid growth after World War II, particularly relating to commercial passenger service.

By the late 1950's, a new 34,000 square foot terminal building was opened at the Triad Airport. In the early 1980's, the current terminal building was part of a major expansion effort of Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport. This terminal building has 30 total gates and a modern floor plan. The expansion of the new terminal building in 1982 was coordinated with the opening of the airport's first on-site hotel.

Airplanes land and take off using three asphalt runways at the Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport. The longest runway at the airport, which is 10,000 feet long, was part of the 1982 renovation project. The other runways are 9,000 feet and 6,380 feet in length.

Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport plays an important role in the local education system and economy. The airport is home to the Aviation Center of Guilford Technical Community College. This partnership trains local aviation mechanics for exciting careers at the Triad Airport and perhaps anywhere else in the world.

The most convenient parking option at the Greensboro Piedmont Triad International Airport is the indoor parking garage that's located right across the terminal building. The two long-term parking lots are also situated right near the terminal.
