Geneva Airport Information

Geneva Cointrin International Airport also is known simply as the Geneva Airport. Officially, the facility is titled the Cointrin International Airport but is officially known as GVA. No matter the name, the airport serves as the principle air service provider for the city of Geneva, Switzerland. The airport has a rather unique location with a portion of the facilities boundaries adjacent to the border between Switzerland and France. The terminals and flights accommodate passengers from both countries.

Air operations at Geneva trace back to about 1920 with grass-field operations and a few sheds for aircraft maintenance and passenger services. As part of its neutrality during World War II, Switzerland banned all air travel with foreign destinations shutting down its airport industry. Since the war, the airport has undergone a number of expansions to accommodate the heavy air traffic it sees now.

Geneva Cointrin International Airport handles about 13 million passengers each year. Most use one of two terminals. T1 is known as the primary terminal and has five concourses. Terminal T2 is commonly used during the high traffic of the seasonal ski season and has limited amenities for travelers. The terminals provide a total of more than 55 gates and 110 check in positions.

In reality, Geneva Cointrin International Airport operates with a single runway. One 13,000 foot or 3,900 meters runway includes lights and instrument landing and takeoff services. This runway is approved for all types of commercial aircraft. Parallel to the runway is a 2,700 foot or 800 meter long grass runway. This runway is not equipped for instrument flight and limited to single engine aircraft. The airport runways accommodate about 170,000 takeoffs and landings each year.

The airport is also equipped to handle up to 12 million tons of airfreight each year. Freight facilities include a mortuary, livestock handling, hazardous material handling, as well as the basic secure and bonded storage. The cargo terminal is also equipped to handle extremely large freight and express shipments.

Passengers making connecting flights at Geneva Cointrin International Airport can do so quickly. The airport recommends allowing 40 minutes between arrival and departure for all flights including international destinations. Special facilities at the airport for vacation travelers include a tourist help desk and special rooms for parents traveling with children.
