Fort Myers International Airport Information

Southwest Florida International Airport serves For Myers, Florida, and other regions including Cape Coral, Captiva Island, Sanibel Island, and Naples. The airport is less than 20 miles away from Fort Myers downtown district. It was originally known as Southwest Florida Regional Airport, but the name was changed back in 1993 to the Southwest Florida International Airport. Page Field was the original airport of Fort Myers, but it did not have the size or space to have the increased air traffic that the region was receiving. The recognition of this reality led Lee County to look into building a brand new airport in 1973. In 1983, the airport officially opened. The airport did extremely well in terms of business and reached its capacity in 1988. The Lee County Port Authority, which oversees the facility, made the decision to increase capacity and built a new terminal. The new terminal is named the Midfield Terminal Complex. It opened in 2005.

There is only one runway in Southwest Florida International Airport. The runway is 12,000 feet long. In fact, the airport is one of the busiest airports in the nation that has only one runway. There is only one terminal at the airport and it has three concourses. They are Concourses B, C and D. There are 28 gates in the airport. Concourse B receives international flights.

A number of parking options are available at the airport. People who are looking at long-term parking can go to the Long-term Parking Lot. This lot offers free shuttle service. This service meets people at their vehicles and brings them to the terminal. When the people come back from their destination, the shuttle drives them back to their vehicle. In addition to this, shuttle drivers take care of lifting heavy pieces of luggage for passengers. For people who plan to leave their vehicles at their airport longer than 60 days, they can call the parking authority about taking care of it for an extended period. Short-term parking is available for folks who prefer to park for a brief amount of time. This parking is found in the Short-term Parking Garage. The Long and Short-term lots are open to folks 24 hours a day, every day of the week. The Cell Phone Lot is an excellent place for drivers to park for free while waiting for their family or friends to arrive at the terminal curb.
