Dubai Information

Dubai City is on the northern coast of Dubai Emirate in the United Arab Emirates. The area had settlers as early as 1095, but the earliest town dates from 1799. In 1833, Dubai was formally established, and it became a protectorate of the United Kingdom in 1892. At that time, it was an important trading hub. Today, it is a hub for business and a global city that boasts the tallest structure in the world, the Burj Khalifa. It is also the home of the tallest hotel the Burj al Arab, which is an extravagant, seven star hotel designed to resemble the sail of a Dhow.

The Al Fahidi Fort, which was built in 1799, is the oldest building that still exists in Dubai, there have been ancient tools found in the area. Ceramics from pre-Islamic times have also been found. It is the site of many towns that served as trading centers for goods that passed between the Eastern and Western civilizations.

The coastal region was completely covered with sand about 5,000 years ago. While constructing sewer lines for Dubai Internet City, an ancient mangrove swamp was discovered that dates back 7,000 years.

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and five other emirates joined to form the United Arab Emirates in 1971, when Britain withdrew from the Persian Gulf. Dubai does not conform to the judicial system of the UAE. It has its own court systems for civil, criminal and Sharia issues. Non-Muslims do not appear before the Sharia Court.

Dubai suffered financially during the first Gulf War, because bankers and traders left the country. They came back in the late 1990s along with many others who moved their business from Kuwait and Bahrain. Because of high oil prices, Dubai decided to focus their economy on free trade and tourism. Dubai also has two major ports, one of which is the largest man-made harbor in the world and the largest port in the Middle East.

Dubai is in the middle of the Arabian Desert, but the sand is completely different from the other emirates. It has soft, white sand created from shells and coral, and large, sand dunes that look orange because of iron oxide. It is almost always sunny in Dubai, and in the summer it gets extremely hot and windy. It also gets very humid during the summer.

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city with people living there from all over the world, but the architecture, clothing, music, lifestyle and cuisine are all influenced by the Islamic and Arab culture.
