Christchruch Airport Ground Transportation

Christchurch International Airport is located in a rural area 8 miles (12 kilometers) northwest of central Christchurch. The airport itself has only 2 terminals, an International Terminal and a Domestic Terminal, and they are within walking distance of each other.

Travel between the airport and Christchurch is simple, and there are several options. Taxi cab service is available outside both terminals, and is by far the fastest way to get into the city. It should be about a 20 minute ride. Note, however, that a cab ride to the city center is about 4 times the cost of a public transportation bus ticket, and prices vary based on the time of day and the day of the week.

The Airport Flyer offers a public bus service, which is more cost effective for travelers on a budget. All busses arrive and depart from the far end of the International Terminal. Three lines stop at the airport; line 3 runs through the central Christchurch, while lines 10 and 29 run through the outlying areas. A bus ride into central Christchurch takes approximately 30 minutes.

In addition to public transportation, several private shuttle bus companies offer service to any destination within central Christchurch for a price based on the number of travelers. As this is a door-to-door service, this is a great option for group travelers, and could potentially be more economical than public transportation.

For travel to the airport, Christchurch International has ample parking space for travelers who choose to drive. There are two, free short-term parking options - a 15-minute zone for loading and unloading or dropping off passengers, and a 30-minute short-term lot for picking up arriving travelers. Long-term parking is available for varying rates.

Because the train system in Christchurch is not yet particularly extensive, and because so many of New Zealand's greatest attractions are situated in rural areas, travelers may wish to consider renting a car for the duration of their trip. Several well-known companies have service centers in the airport itself, and reservations can be made ahead of time or upon arrival. The drive into central Christchurch is relaxed and does not require any highway or high-speed travel.
