Chicago O'Hare Airport Ground Transportation

O’Hare International airport is one of the busiest airports in the world and is one of two major airports that serve Chicago, Illinois. The airport is located on the outskirts of the city and about 15 miles from the Chicago central business district. While the airport may be a bit removed from the rest of the city, there are several ways a person could get to the airport, regardless of where they are in the city or surrounding area.

For those people located in downtown Chicago, or in one of the other neighborhoods located near the central business district, there are several options for getting to the airport. Due to Chicago’s heavy traffic, which tends to be heaviest during the busiest travel hours, the best way to get to the airport may be to take public transportation. The most efficient form of public transportation would be to take the CTA’s Blue Line. The Blue Line is an elevated train, which connects from downtown to the O’Hare airport, with many stops along the way. Anyone located downtown could take the Blue Line from one of the many stops and be at the airport within 45 minutes.

Beyond the Blue Line, there are other options to get from the city to the airport. The airport is located about 15 miles from the central business district and can be easily accessed by taking Interstate 90 west. If a traveler does not have a car, they could easily find or call a cab who would be more than willing to take them there. Depending on the time of the day, the amount of time that it will take to get to the airport ranges significantly. During non-rush hour traffic, a traveler could get to the airport in as little as 20 minutes. However, during rush hour or poor weather, the 15 mile drive could easily take over an hour. For those people heading to O’Hare from outside of the city, there are several ways to get to the airport. Interstates 90 and 294 run directly by the airport and provide easy access to people coming from the South, North, and West.

Since the airport is quite large, and contains five terminals, getting around can be difficult for some people. Luckily, there are moving walkways located throughout and in between the terminals which limit the amount of walking that needs to be done. Handicapped people can also obtain rides from airport personnel who will drive them through the airport on a golf cart.
