Chicago Midway International Airport Information

Chicago Midway International Airport in Chicago, Illinois is the second largest airport in the city. It was originally built in 1923 and was known to folks as Chicago Air Park. In the beginning, it was used for airmail and commercial flights. As time wore on, it became a passenger airport. According to some, it was the busiest airport in the world in 1931 and regained that title for a number of years in the late 1940's and 1950's. At one point, it was known as the Crossroads of the World. Chicago Air Park was renamed in 1949 the Chicago Midway International Airport. It was named after the Battle of Midway, which happened in 1942. After Chicago O'Hare International Airport opened in 1955, Chicago Midway began to lose flights and passengers to the new airport. The city received a renovation from the city of Chicago and some business came back to Midway Chicago. In addition to this renovation, the airport received another remodel in the 1990's into the 21st Century where new concourses, an underground parking garage, baggage areas and more was built. Today, it continues to be an important airport in America.

The Midway airport has five runways in operation. With the various buildings in Chicago that are around the airport, there are various takeoff and landing restrictions. These restrictions have resulted in airlines choosing to do business with Chicago O'Hare. Runway 13 C is not generally used with the exception of during certain weather conditions. The three concourses that serve passengers in Chicago Midway are Concourses A, B and C.

For folks who are looking to park at Midway International Airport, there are a number of parking options that are available. The Main Parking Garage does an excellent job in protecting vehicles from the elements, especially from the harsh winters that Chicago experiences every year. Travelers who prefer an economic price while parking their vehicles at the airport can do so at the Economy Parking Garage. There is specialized parking for the disabled in all the parking areas at the airport. For folks who prefer to park for a couple hours or less, the first level of the Main Parking Garage is the best choice to do so. Midway International has provided two locally convenient cell phone lots that enable motorists a place to park while waiting to pick up a family member or friend.
