About Brussels Airport

Brussels AirportDating back to 1940, the Brussels Airport serves as a major link between Europe and Africa. This international airport is located 12 KM northeast of Brussels proper. It was chosen as the Best Airport in Europe for 2005 by the Airports Council International/International Air Transport Association (ACI/IATA), which chose the airport based off of thousands of surveys from passengers.

The airport was originally built when the Germans were occupying Brussels; local legend claims that the Germans asked the locals were an airstrip should be built and they were told to use this area, which locals knew was particularly foggy. After the occupation ended, the airstrip and its buildings went through several incarnations over the years, especially in the '60s and '70s when commercial flying became more prevalent until it became the airport as it is known today, serving over 17 million passengers per year.

Inside the airport, passengers can avail themselves of several bars and cafes, as well as many shops (including duty-free). Beyond these staples of every airport, the Brussels airport also offers a pharmacy and multi-denominational places of worship.
