Birmingham International Airport Information

The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is located in Birmingham, Alabama. It originally opened in 1931 with one runway and a terminal. The military controlled the airport during World War II. During this time, they acquired land and updated various facilities. The city received the airport back from the military in 1948. Over the course of time, the airport continued to grow and received more air traffic and passengers. New buildings were added and older ones were destroyed. New buildings included a control tower and terminal. The airport was named after Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth, who was a leader in the civil rights movement. The international airport in Birmingham has one terminal and one concourse. Plans have been made to expand the terminal and concourses.

At one point, four runways served Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Today, there are two runways. The first is just over 12,000 feet. The second is 7,100 feet. Both runways are made out of asphalt.

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport has a lot to offering for folks who desire to park at one of their parking lots. For passengers who will be parking their cars for an extended amount of time, the Airport Remote Parking is the way to go. Though it is a fair distance from the terminal, the airport offers an excellent shuttle service. This service picks people up at the lot and drops them off at the terminal. For passengers returning from a trip, the shuttle service brings them to their vehicles. For people who are planning to park at the airport for four hours or less, one of the best places to park is at Hourly Parking. Parking is conveniently located in the parking deck, which is close to the terminal and baggage claim. For folks who are planning to spend four hours or more at the airport, Daily Parking is an option. Like Hourly Parking, Daily Parking is close to the terminal. For folks who would prefer to pick-up their passengers in a free lot, the place to go is the Cell Phone Lot. Located just a few minutes from the airport, the Cell Phone is a free parking lot where folks can wait for their passengers. Unlike other airport cell phone parking lots, this parking lot does not have any time limits for folks who are waiting. It is important to note that the Cell Phone Lot only has 40 parking spaces available.
