About Birmingham Airport

Birmingham AirportSituated about 6 miles southeast from downtown Birmingham in the West Midlands area, Birmingham airport is one of the busiest in the UK outside of London and a major hub for FlyBe, BmiBaby, and Ryanair. With international departures to every continent, Birmingham airport has two runways with plans to extend the longest further.

In 1939 the original Elmdon grass airstrip was opened, and soon paved runways were added. The present Birmingham airport was born in 1984, with a new terminal built along the east side of the runway adjacent to the railroad station. A second terminal was added in 1991 for a British Airways Eurohub. In 2009 a new international pier was opened, which can handle the Airbus A380 Super Jumbo airliner. Both terminals at Birmingham offer a selection of shops and eateries, and the original pre-war terminal has been preserved as airport offices.

In 2000 an air-rail people mover link started between the airport and the nearby railroad station, with connections to London Euston station. Outside terminal one, there are buses linking the airport with Birmingham Coach Station, Solihull, Coventry, and Erdington. Black cab stands are outside each terminal. The M42 Motorway runs north and south by Birmingham airport, with the A45 providing an easy drive downtown.
