Berlin Tegel Airport Information

Berlin Tegel Airport, sometimes known by its airport code TXL, is located in Tegel, Germany. This community is located about 5 miles, or 8 kilometers, from Berlin. It is the most commonly used airport for travelers to or from Berlin with about 15 million passengers noted each year.

The historic Berlin Airlift utilized Berlin Tegel Airport as one of the destinations of the transport aircraft that fed, clothed, and provided energy for the citizens of Berlin during the blockade of the city in 1948. It has served as a commercial airport since 1960 although it was used for military purposes during both world wars.

Berlin Tegel Airport would be considered undersized when compared to many of the world's major airports. Two buildings are divided into four terminals providing arrival and departure space for domestic and international flights. The small terminal provides easy movement from gate to baggage claim or the exits but may seem crowded to some people. Each gate has its own security checks. This forces people to go through security even if just changing planes at the airport.

The airport is served by two parallel runways. The longest runway in about 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) long while the shorter runway is 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) long. Larger aircraft commonly use the longer runway. Arriving and departing aircraft are required to observe noise reduction regulations from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time every day. Although there have been no incidents, as recently as 2009 wartime explosives were removed from the airport grounds and runways.

Travelers utilizing Berlin Tegel Airport commonly arrive by bus, car, or taxi as there is no rail service to the airport. Its location close to the heart of Berlin reduces the time required and the cost of transportation to or from the airport. The terminal includes stores, restaurants, and lounges allowing travelers to pass the time between flights without leaving the airport.

Airfreight is also a major part of the Berlin Tegel Airport operation. The ground facilities include refrigerated and frozen areas as well as more standard warehouse spaces. The airport is located at the crossroads of two major German highways allowing for easy truck transportation to the freight's final destination.
