About Berlin Tegel Airport

Berlin Tegel AirportSituated 5 miles northwest of Berlin, Tegel airport is also known as Otto Lilienthal and has 2 terminals a short walk between each other. The original hexagon shaped terminal at Tegel makes for quick walks to baggage claim, taxis, and airport dining and shopping options. Tegel is the home base of Air Berlin, and also handles many charter flights. Several BVG Berlin public bus lines connect Tegel with the city.

Tegel began during the Berlin airlift in 1948 when the original Tempelhof airport could not handle all the cargo flights bringing needed supplies to the city. French occupation forces quickly built a runway in only 3 months. The jet age prompted airlines to move to Tegel with it's longer runway. Air France, Pan Am, and British scheduled and charter airlines operated at Tegel until the German reunification began in 1990, which allowed German airlines to once again serve Berlin, replacing foreign carriers.

The old Tempelhof airport was closed in 2008, and the former East Berlin airport of Schonefeld is being completely redone and expanded to become the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, which is scheduled to replace Tegel in 2012.
