Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport Information

Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok is a unique airport that is easy for travelers to get around and offers a wide variety of different amenities to make traveling enjoyable. The culture and history of the area is seen in the decoration and art that is displayed around the airport with shopping and restaurants of all types accessible for those that have some time to browse.

History

Building the Airport was a long process starting with the creation of the New Bangkok International Airport Company in 1996. Construction did not start until January of 2002 due to financial crisis, and was finally complete and ready for opening on September 28th, 2006. Helmut Jahu designed the airport to be environmentally friendly while being unique and beautiful. Constructed of steel, the building is very modern in design with curved lines, arched ceilings and glass windows throughout the structure. It is home to the world’s largest control tower and is the third largest single building airport terminal.

Location

The Airport is located in Racha Thewa, thirty kilometers east of Bangkok, with easy access to major highways. A wide variety of Airlines depart and arrive from the airport including Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, and the newest Tiger Thai Airways. There are several different hotels and amenities in the area, including a new hotel right on the airport grounds. Transportation to the airport is offered by cab or bus, making traveling to and from easy.

Amenities

When inside the airport, some areas may feel like you have just stepped into a mall. There are a large variety of shops with everything from clothing, perfume and cosmetics, to art stores and gift galleries with locally handcrafted items. Keeping the history of the area is important and by incorporating the local arts, tourists are able to get a feel for the culture of the area. There are also a wide variety of restaurants and snack shops whether you are eating in a hurry, or have time to sit down and relax. International places such as Burger King and Dairy Queen are available as well as many places to get a more local type of food such as Kinramen, offering an assortment of different Japanese noodle dishes. There are four different wine and bar lounges as well as snack centers to pick up something quick to take on the plane.
