Bangkok Information

Rich in history and entertainment, the bustling city of Bangkok is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Known as the “city of angels” and located in the central region of Thailand, this capital city boasts around 9,000,000 inhabitants. But it wasn’t always so. Bangkok started as a sleepy group of villages and was named as the capital in 1782 by Rama I in an effort to protect the Thai from the Burmese who had already destroyed the former capital. Under the reign of the Chakri rulers, the city has grown to a thriving metropolis with all the modern conveniences.

Steeped in a strong Buddhist tradition, Bangkok is home to over 400 working temples. Top attractions include the Temple of the Emerald Buddha with a 26-inch Buddha carved in jade and Wat Po with an enormous golden reclining Buddha. One of the most popular tourist attractions is The Grand Palace, former residence of the royal family.

Located on the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok has been known as the “Venice of the East” because of its canals, many of which have now been paved. Still, its floating markets provide entertainment for tourists and fresh produce for locals.

If it’s culture you seek, you can visit the National Museum, the Vimanmek Mansion, or the Suan Pakkad Palace for some fine art. Another favorite is the Jim Thompson House, former home of Jim Thompson who founded the famous Thai Silk Company.

Thai massage is world-renowned – whether it’s traditional Thai massage or spa massage. Just be aware of what you are getting beforehand, as they are also known for adult-rated massages and a higher rate of HIV.

From upscale shopping malls like Mah Boon Krong to outdoor markets like the ever-popular Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, shopping is plentiful in Bangkok. Nightclubs and live music bars abound as well.

Bangkok offers family options with the Dusit Zoo, 140-square-acre Lumpini Park and a water park called Siam Park on the outskirts of the city.

Getting around Bangkok is easy as they have both a Skytrain (BTS) and underground subway (MRT), as well as taxis, buses and boats. Be sure to dress comfortably since the weather is hot and humid and in June-September, the monsoon rains can come quickly.

With an exciting mix of culture, history and entertainment, a trip to Bangkok will provide you an eclectic experience you won’t soon forget.
