About Baltimore International Airport

Baltimore International AirportAlthough overshadowed by Washington National and Dulles airports, Baltimore International Airport has been a busy growing airport for decades, primarily as an eastern hub for discount airlines Southwest and AirTran, which are now merging. BWI has some international service but Southwest provides over half the flights.

Construction began in 1947 on 3200 acres of unincorporated Anne Arundel county, with the debut in 1950 as Friendship Airport. The jet age in 1958 brought nonstop transcontinental jet service, as Washington National was too small for jets so they had to fly into Friendship. The airport was renamed Baltimore Washington International airport after takeover by the state of Maryland in 1973. In 1980 BWI became the first airport in the country with a light rail connection, and in 2005 it was renamed the Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in honor of the former supreme court justice and Baltimore native.

Commonly known as BWI, the airport has 4 runways and has been consistently rated as one of the healthiest and easiest accessed airports. BWi is 10 miles south of Baltimore and 30 miles northeast of Washington DC near the Interstate 95 corridor.
