About Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
One of the busiest airports in Europe, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main point of entry to the Netherlands and home base of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and smaller carriers. Schiphol is about 5 miles southwest of Amsterdam and is one of the largest international passenger and cargo hubs in Europe, with service to about 90 countries. Schiphol is built entirely below sea level, with 6 runways. The tallest control tower in Europe opened on Schiphol in 1991.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is built as one large terminal divided into 3 halls, with a large shopping area and art museum, plus a mortuary, and in 2010 became the first airport with a permanent public library. A large public viewing area is open to visitors atop the terminal. Under the passenger terminal is a railroad station providing service to Amsterdam, plus Rotterdam and other Dutch cities. Express train service runs from Schiphol airport to Belgium, France, and Germany.
Schiphol began as a military airfield barracks in 1916, and in 1919 the Fokker Aircraft company began a factory nearby. Civilian flights began in 1920 in this former underwater area, thus the name Schiphol means ship hole in English.
